About Guy Henderson

Tuition

I have 2 years of one-on-one teaching experience and currently have a number of private students of differing ages and abilities. I have also worked as a freelance tutor for London Music Centre and as a visiting tutor for The Gower School in Islington. I have been working with several young students for these organisations, preparing them for their Grade Examinations.

I offer drum tuition for all ages from complete beginner to the more experienced. I cover all aspects of drumming and will work to tailor lessons for the desired direction of the student – I can also give thorough preparation for Grades if required. I will cover technique, rudiments, reading music, modern electronics (triggers, etc) and will work through many different styles and genres depending on the tastes and desires of the student. I also offer tuition and guidance on drum tuning and drum recording techniques.

I am based at 95 Woodstock Road which is a 5 minute walk from Finsbury Park tube station. It is equipped with my Ludwig Maple Classic drum kit and Zildjian cymbals. It also has a PA system set up for playing along to pre-recorded music and a good collection of microphones and studio equipment for recording drums. I am also available for home visits and as a visiting tutor to schools and am very happy to travel anywhere within London.

I provide all study materials and will be keen to discuss a plan of action to work to the student’s needs.

I have a full DBS/CRB check with up-to-date certificate.

About

Guy has been behind the drum kit in various musical projects from the age of 13. His primary musical involvement has been with London based 5-piece, Zulu Winter. He was a founding member of this alternative / indie collective who released their debut album ‘Language’ in May 2012 on PIAS records.

He moved to London in 2002 to train as a drummer at Drumtech in Acton and completed the Undergraduate Diploma course there early the following year. In more recent years he has trained with the highly acclaimed tutor Bob Armstrong.

His first band, The Molotovs signed to Fierce Panda Records and released their debut mini-album, ‘And the Heads Did Roll’ in September 2009, which included the singles ‘Come to Grief’ and ‘City’s Guest’. All drums for this record were recorded by Guy at Fortress Studios.

In early 2010 he co-founded Zulu Winter and after a busy year of writing and recording they signed to Sony BMG and PIAS records. They released their debut album ‘Language’ in May 2012, which features the singles ‘Silver Tongue’, ‘We Should Be Swimming’ and ‘Key to My Heart’. All three singles were picked up for playlist on BBC 6 Music and XFM and have been played across national and international radio. Guy recorded all the drums for this album with acclaimed producer Tom Morris at ‘Fortress Studios’ and ‘The Pool’ studio in South London.

Guy has been busy touring since Autumn 2011. Live festival appearances with Zulu Winter have included SXSW in Texas, Glastonbury on the Other Stage, Reading and Leeds Festivals, T in the Park, The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party, Bestival, Pukkelpop in Belgium and Eurosonic and Lowlands in Holland. International touring has taken in most of Europe, an Australian tour, Canada, Japan and three trips to the USA. As well as a Zulu Winter UK headline tour in May 2012 Guy has been on support tours with Friendly Fires, Foster the People, Keane and The Kaiser Chiefs; playing in several 2-3k capacity venues, including Brixton Academy, Shepherds Bush Empire and most of the O2 Academies.

More recently Guy has been touring  with the band ‘Cymbals’ on their 2nd album tour of the UK and North America. He has most recently been working in Berlin with the German artist ‘Nessi’ who was touring throughout 2015 in support of her debut album, ‘Rolling with the Punches’.

Aside from his work behind the kit Guy has been developing his experience in audio engineering and production. He worked on the production and mix of Zulu Winter’s second album Stutter and has been collaborating on a number of recording projects since. In addition he has been recording electronic productions for his solo output. During 2017 he will be based at Abbey Road Studios in London on an engineering and production programme there.
