About Matt Parr

I've been playing drums for twenty five years and have worked in a variety of situations from cover bands, an original metal band (Drivechain) and other numerous original acts. My playing has also included theatre work for shows and pantomimes. I've also been ucky enough to be asked to stand in for lots of acts over the years including Reggae band Melosa, The Cadence (who I was eventually asked to join), Third Rock, Street Spirit and many others.

I started teaching professionally over ten years ago and today I work in ten in schools throughout Devon and my studio in Exeter. Drum Magic studios was purpose built by my Dad, myself and another local tutor.

My studio has four drum kits (two acoustic and two electronic as I’m a lefty hence one left and one right handed), a full PA sound system for playing along with tracks and plenty of percussion toys. There is also a wealth of tuition materials from classic drum books, many sheets of beats and fills etc through to more complex rudimental studies. There are also hundreds of transcriptions for songs, these are always great fun to work on and, I think, vital to develop as a drummer.

I tailor every lesson to the abilities/ requirements of the student. I feel it’s important to push a student but only enough to help them progress without feeling uncomfortable or out of their depth. The fact that both the student and I are playing kits together in a lesson adds a great deal too, it’s far more productive than using a single kit and having to swap places to demonstrate techniques etc. Drumming should be a fun activity, I take my drumming very seriously but enjoy it every time I sit behind a kit. It’s called PLAYING after all!
