About Jonas Golland

Lessons available online or in Hackney:

For ten years I've been playing professionally with Tiger Lillies, Michael Rosen, Hot Swing Boheme, Jowe Head, Psychoyogi and many more in the jazz, punk, rock, progressive rock, funk and cabaret genres. I love how diverse cultures, mediums, ideas and experiences are linked by music, which has given me a more enriched life.

Before achieving my 2:1 Bachelor's Honours degree at DrumTech/London College of Music, I was an actor and self-taught drummer. But I've also worked as a singer and done sessions as a guitarist, keyboardist and bassist in some contexts, and the connection between drumming and these areas is huge. I learned my musical voice from experimentation, composition and perspiration. Dancing has helped me discover it too.

My latest DBS equivalent is the ACRO international criminal record check in 2019.

These days I'm usually teaching in person at Hicaz Studio in Stoke Newington, east London, with a lot of space, and two kits. But in my home in north London we can have lessons on video with a little more time flexibility in my dedicated music room.

Playing well and teaching are two different things. I love to study and learn from what challenges each student brings to the session. We each have a unique musical voice, and that is the reason we learn all these technical skills, rather than conforming to a type.

I want you to be motivated to teach yourself as I did. I have trained students who went on to complete grades and do professional work. In my 10 years of teaching experience, I've also experience with learning difficulties as an amanuensis in universities across London, tutoring excluded students in north London, and working in formal classroom settings as a teaching assistant. Currently I'm training in supporting students with dyslexia and related difficulties.

The most well-being I get from music is singing, which I have done since I was young, and since then have also sang lead vocals and backing vocals professionally with Tiger Lillies and Nathan Futo, Burford Society and in my own songs. I'm interested in the work of Alise Ojay.

My new Youtube channel has a set of talks beginning on Music and Well-Being in my life, as part of Musictober for youth charity Music Relief (music-relief.org).

Rates:

  • £35 per one hour in person (I will consider visiting your location in London)
  • £120 for 4 in-person lessons paid in advance
  • £30 per hour for online lessons with greater time flexibility.

Your Achievements:

For graded studies, Trinity Guildhall exams are recommended, but there are alternatives.

Aural (listening) based learning is offered with an emphasis on expanded music listening. Playing by ear, call and response, improvisation, or other listening based approaches are often underestimated. Playing depends on our improved listening, at every point. Music in a sense is the teaching of listening.

My Qualifications /Education:

  • BMus(Hons) Popular Music Performance
  • London College of Music/UWL/BIMM/Tech Music Schools
  • Certificate in Student Engagement/Representation
  • Jazz Studies with Pete Estabrook of Santa Rosa Junior College, California.
  • Private tuition with Zach Morris of Rhythm Matters, CA, USA and Simon Strong of Drumtech, London
  • Harmony and Theory tuition with Muriel Ray (Rest in Peace) of the Burford Society

Touring Experience:

Playing internationally with the Tiger Lillies cabaret band has given me ample experience in dynamics, jazz ballads, minimalism, brushes, blues, backing vocals, visual elements of performance, playing with an orchestra (Berg orchestra), comedy, adapting to criteria (hired kits, tuning, hardware limitations, cymbals and experimentation) sound tech, theatre pieces (movement and dance), problem solving and performing confidence. It has given me a background in touring and all the associated challenges, skills and stories involved in it.

Private Tutoring 10 years:

  • Hicaz Studio
  • North London Music Centre/Musico
  • EnfieldTrinity at Bowes church
  • Palmers Green Youth percussion workshops, written and facilitated for Barnet Libraries
  • Private Studio in Bounds Green
